Entry requirements

In order to meet the general entry requirements for first cycle studies you must have successfully completed upper secondary education and documented skills in English language and for admission to this course the student must also have attained 90 credits for the courses which may be included in the Bachelor Programme in Psychology, of which 75 credits must be from the compulsory courses in years 1 and 2. The following courses should be included in this and be completed entirely with at least a pass grade: Theory of Science (P0044A) and Methods in Social Sciences 1 (P0045A) or equivalent courses.

The selection is based on 1-165 credits.



Course Aim
The aim of the course is for the student to practice, develop and show their ability to, in an adequate way, apply theory and method in order to solve problems relevant to activities in psychology. Upon completion of the course the student shall be able to: 

Knowledge and understanding
After completing the course, the student should be able to show knowledge and understanding

  • Of how to formulate a relevant problem in the subject area psychology
  • Of how to search for relevant scientific studies in databases and make use of its relevance for own study. 

Skills and abilities
After completing the course, the student should be able to show the ability to:

  • Treat different theories within the subject at an acceptable level
  • Be able to make a motivated and relevant choice of theoretical basis for one’s own work
  • Develop and formulate a relevant research problem from a selected subject in the area of  psychology.
  • Be able to choose and motivate the method for the study with an understanding of the impact of the choice on the study results
  • With connection to the chosen theory and method be able to collect information relevant to the problem formulation
  • In a relevant way be able to report the collected information in writing.
  • Based on the chosen theory and method in a scientifically correct way be able to analyze and answer a formulated problem
  • Be able to assess the scientific and practical relevance of the results obtained.
  • Be able to express oneself well in writing in a linguistically and scientifically correct way.
  • Be able to orally communicate results both experts and to non-experts.
  • Be able to defend and discuss their results from different perspectives
  • Be able to critically examine other studies in a constructive and scientific way. 

Evaluation ability and approach:
After completing the course, the student should be able to show the ability to

  • Make assessments of collected information with regard to psychological principles, theories, methods and analyzes.
  • Demonstrate the ability to maintain a critical approach to the scientific literature
  • Demonstrate insight into the scientific way of working.

Contents
The degree project is an essay written by one or two students. The essay shall utilize a scientific approach on a problem in the area of psychology and the essay shall be presented both as a written report and in oral format. The scientific research questions to be investigated are determined in consultation with the supervisor and thereafter the student must independently search for relevant literature for the scientific issues to be studied and write the essay in accordance with the subject’s established essay template. Each student shall also evaluate and perform opposition on degree project written by other students. The essay can be written both in Swedish and in English.

Realization
Each course occasion´s language and form is stated and appear on the course page on Luleå University of Technology's website.
The department appoints supervisor for each essay project. The supervisor and student come to an agreement with respect to a time schedule and the content of the supervision. Material the student wants feedback on should be the supervisor at hand no later than 5 days before a scheduled meeting. Supervision/feedback can be given in terms of a face-to-face or digital meeting or through the use of e-mail or phone and the mode should be stated in the agreement between supervisor and student. Supervision is provided within a period of one semester after first course registration. During the project course skills such as critical thinking, ability to formulate problems, laboratory work, independence, understanding the scientific way of working and oral and written communication are trained. 

Parts of the content of the course can be held in English.


Examination
If there is a decision on special educational support, in accordance with the Guideline Student's rights and obligations at Luleå University of Technology, an adapted or alternative form of examination can be provided.
The degree project should be discussed at a mandatory seminar at the end of every semester. At the seminar the student acts both as a respondent with respect to own thesis and as an opponent on another, by the examiner assigned, student’s thesis. The supervisor report to the examiner that the thesis is ready to be presented as well as approve to that the thesis is ready to be handed to the examiner for examination. To pass the course the student shall present and defend own thesis and act as an opponent on another student’s thesis. As well as participate in compulsory meetings and seminars as decided by the supervisor.The essay work is examined on the basis of the grade scale U, G and VG and the presentation of one’s own essay work and opposition to another’s essay is assessed on the basis of the grade scale U or G.To pass the course the student shall participate in compulsery meetings and seminars as well as register the thesis according to LTUs rules.

Remarks
Students must register for the courses themselves, or contact HLT educational administration eduhlt@ltu.se, not later than three days after the quarter commences. Failure to do so can result in the place being lost. This rule also applies to students with a guaranteed place.
