Entry requirements

In order to meet the general entry requirements for first cycle studies you must have successfully completed upper secondary education and documented skills in English language + Swedish upper secondary school courses Mathematics 2a/2b/2c, Social Studies 1b/1a1+1a2 (specifik entry A5). Or: Swedish upper secondary school courses Mathematics C, Social Studies A (specifik entry 5)

Selection

The selection is based on final school grades or Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test.



Course Aim
After completing the course the student is expected to:
• describe the basic steps of a statistical study;
• identify probability distributions and calculate probabilities for the situations covered in the course, among other things, the normal distribution;
• describe and analyze the relationship between two or more variables, i.e., by correlation, simple linear regression and multiple linear regression;
• collect, compile, process and present data of different types;
• search the sources of official statistics;
• present orally and in writing the results of completed surveys;
• critically examine a statistical work;
• use a statistical software for processing, analyzing and presentation of materials.

Contents
The course consists of the following components:
• Descriptive statistics: methods to describe different kinds of variables, graphical and numerical methods.
• Probability distributions: normal distribution etc.
• Use of sources for publicly available data.
• Indices.
• Data production: sampling and experiment.

Realization
The course is based upon the following components
. Tutorials where students work with suggested exercises.Computer assignments, usually done by pairs of students.
. Quizzes: answering exercises organized in sets on the course web.
. Individual assignments.
. Seminars for discussion of larger projects, usually based on students\' own data
collection and done by groups of four or five students.
. Lectures, often given after a certain part has been covered in tutorials.

Examination
. Final exam at the end of the course.
. Completion of compulsory assignments.
. Attendance at certain course sessions.

Remarks
The course includes group work to be presented orally and/or in writing. For this to work requires active participation from the students throughout the course.
