Entry requirements

In order to meet the general entry requirements for first cycle studies you must have successfully completed upper secondary education and documented skills in English language and attained at least 90 credits, of which at least 60 credits in Political Science. The following courses should be included in this and be completed entirely with at least a passing grade: Political Science A, Political Theory (S0005N) 7,5 credits, Political Science A, Swedish Politics and Public Adm. (S0006N) 7,5 credits, Political Science A, Comparative Politics (S0007N) 7,5 credits, Political Science A, International Politics (S0008N) 7,5 credits, Politics and Policy in the European Union (S0026N) 7,5 credits, Democracy, Development and Democratization (S0031N) 7,5 credits, Research design (S0037N) 7,5 credits, Governance in theory and practice (S0038N) 7,5 credits, or equivalent.

Course Aim
The overall aim of the course is for students to develop their skills in scientific writing in political science. Each student writes and defends a degree project in political science that develops his/her abilities to:   

• Identify and define a relevant scientific problem to be dealt with in a degree project that, in turn, requires the ability to: 
• Assimilate scientific studies and assess their relevance to the topic of the degree project
• Design and apply an appropriate analytical framework to answer the research questions
• Collect relevant empirical material
• Convey clear and coherent arguments, both orally and in writing
• Defend the degree project and critically examine other students’ degree projects based on requirements for good scientific presentation

The choice of topic, research problem, theory, method and material are specified by the student in a written memorandum which is discussed with supervisors and other students at a seminar. The degree project is written individually and is defended at a final seminar where each student also acts as an opponent of another students’ degree project.

Teaching consists of tutoring and seminars. Tutoring is both carried out individually and in student groups. Seminars both comprises memoranda and complete papers. After the final seminar, the student improves the degree project based on the critical remarks. Tutoring is provided within a period of one semester after first course registration.

If there is a decision on special educational support, in accordance with the Guideline Student's rights and obligations at Luleå University of Technology, an adapted or alternative form of examination can be provided.
Examination consists of the written degree project and active participation at seminars, both on the memorandum and the complete degree project, when the student acts as author and discussant. The work with the degree project examines the student’s ability to identify and define an interesting and relevant scientific problem; to assimilate scientific studies and assess their relevance to the topic of the degree project; to design and apply an appropriate analytical framework to answer the research questions; to collect relevant empirical material; to convey clear and coherent arguments and draw relevant conclusions based on the findings. The seminars examine oral and written presentation skills, as well as the ability to critically assess the merits and shortcomings of scientific contributions. 

To pass the course the student shall participate in compulsory meetings and seminars as well as register the thesis according to LTUs rules.


Students must register for the courses themselves or contact ETS educational administration, not later than three days after the quarter commences. Failure to do so can result in the place being lost. This rule also applies to students with a guaranteed place.
