Course Aim
After completing the course, the student should be able to use a critical approach for people with neck and thoracic spine problems in the specialist field of orthopaedic manual therapy to:
  1. With clinical reasoning, conduct adequate physiotherapeutic examinations and treatments, on the basis of functional anatomy, the physiology of pain, and the biopsychosocial model.
  2. Based on physiotherapeutic and medical research with proven experience, analyse and evaluate the examinations findings and thereby plan, execute, and evaluate adequate treatment.
  3. Based on the basis of the evidence, account for adequate examinations and treatment efforts.
  4. Account for the courses theoretical content.
  5. Account for and apply the terms, reliability, validity, sensitivity, and specificity.
  6. Critically conduct a Single subject experimental design study (SSED).
  7. Be knowledgeable about equality from a physiotherapeutic stance.

Each course occasion´s language and form is stated and appear on the course page on Luleå University of Technology's website.
The course is taught through scheduled lessons in Luleå where theory and supervised method exercises are integrated.

The course includes individual or group work, concerning literature as well as assignments, as well as working with people with functional limitations.
All manners of teaching are meant to stimulate and encourage the student to solve problems and to adopt a critical reflective attitude

If there is a decision on special educational support, in accordance with the Guideline Student's rights and obligations at Luleå University of Technology, an adapted or alternative form of examination can be provided.
Objectives 1, 2, and 3 are examined through Oral and practical exams with people with functional limitations (exam 0006, 4 credits. U, G).
Objectives 3 and 4 are examined through written exams (exam 0007, 4 credits. U, G, VG).
Objective 5 is examined through research reports and seminars (exam 0008, 1.5 credits. U, G).
Objective 6 is examined through SSED project work and seminars (exam 0009, 4.5 credits. U, G, VG).
Objective 7 is examined trough an equality report (exam 0010, 1 credit U, G)

The criteria for G (Pass) and VG (Pass with distinction) are specified in the study guide.
