The entire continuum of care is analyzed on film

Students on the programme for specialist nurses, ambulance care, can practice the whole continuum of care, and then analyze the situation. Thanks to a projekt, cameras and technology have been purchased to film the process which gives the learning process another dimension.

– The first time we were too stiff, but now we know that everyone is looking at how we act. When analyzing oneself, one discover things that are good and not so good, says student Görel Follin, Ystad.

The analysis provides a holistic approach

During the week at Luleå University of Technology, students work through a number of cases and play different roles. One camera is attached to one of the paramedics to give the nurse's angle, another camera is inside the ambulance and a teacher is filming the entire event with a handheld camera for a wide angle.

– The entire sequence in the pre-hospital care is filmed with multiple cameras, from the alarm to the transmission to the emergency room. This way, they can analyze and reflect on their own and others' actions and learn from it, says assistant program director Orjan Lestander.

– It is important to have a holistic approach because it is a complex profession, continues lecturer Christer Kågström.

Reflect on their actions

To make sure everything is as real as possible, the paramedics get a report of the alarm and watch a sequence of the incident. At the first video simulation, recorded blue lights and sirens are used to get a natural tension. Everything is performed as realistic as possible, from entering the apartment, loading into the ambulance to the transmission to the emergency room.

After the event, students and teachers analyze the situation together.

The videos are uploaded in the students' learning management system, so they quietly can watch the cutscenes and answer a number of questions. The aim is to get students to reflect on their actions, such as what was good and what could be done differently.

Evaluation better than expected

Next time, the same steps are repeated. Hopefully they bring the lessons learned from the first filming, to see if the films helped to increase their knowledge of learning.

– To see yourself on film, not just once but several times, can bring a new dimension to their learning. When documented, the situation is taken more seriously. In addition, it will be carried out more professionally when it becomes a realistic situation. The evaluation of students is beyond all expectations, says Christer Kågström.

Both Christer and Örjan considers the project has potential for development. The next step is to follow the entire event directly on the screen, for those students who are not active in the situation of care.
