The degree project was named Sweden's best
Their degree project has been named Sweden's best in intensive care nursing education. Lina Stenman and Lisa Högberg, who have just completed their education at Luleå University of Technology, have been rewarded by the Anviva Education Council.
"We wrote about how the nurses experienced not being able to have contact with relatives when there was a restraining order in intensive care", they say.
Lina Stenman and Lisa Högberg have completed the training Postgraduate Diploma Programme in Specialist Nursing, Intensive Care.
Previous studies have shown the importance of the care staff having contact with the relatives in order to have a person- and family-centered care.
Experiences during a restraining order
The purpose of the thesis was to describe nurses' experiences of working in an intensive care unit during the time when there was a restraining order, as it was during periods during the covid pandemic.
They conducted the survey using interviews which they then analyzed.
Relatives of intensive care patients are described by the nurses as an important part of the nursing. They can provide important information and a feeling of security. This means that nurses value the presence of close relatives higher than the positive consequences of the absence of close relatives during the restraining order.
Related to a vulnerable group
The Education Council Anviva gives the following motivation for the appointment:
"The thesis illuminates the relatives' perspective through the intensive care nurse's experiences of caring for patients during the covid-19 pandemic because relatives were not allowed to visit their seriously ill relatives. The work has captured a perspective that is not highlighted to a sufficient extent. During the pandemic, the close relatives were a vulnerable group who were excluded from sharing the intensive care of their loved ones and a great burden fell on the intensive care nurse to, in addition to her own work, also fulfill the role of relatives normally has".
As a result, Lina Stenman and Lisa Högberg will be invited to the congress SFAI & Aniva week in Uppsala in September. They also get travel and accommodation paid for.
Supervisor has been Åsa Engström, professor of Nursing at Luleå University of Technology.
