In a simulation, a group of students in the Nursing program a patient with a predetermined pathology to take care of. The doll, which is controlled by an operator from a separate control room, may suddenly get high blood pressure and, based on what happens to the doll, the students have to solve the situation. In the room with patients and students is also an instructor who can give help when needed.
- It is as close to a real situation as you can get. That is why it is extremely valuable to use simulation in the education, says Örjan Lestander.
An important part of the simulation is debriefing, where the instructor, students, and "patient" reflects on the experience and give opinions about the care and the medical procedure.
The course evaluations indicate that the use of simulation was perceived as very positive from the students. The wish was also that simulation should be included earlier in the program. Full-scale simulation of LTU began in 2009-2010 in semester five, but as of this year, the simulation is used in semster three.
- When students work with the simulation, the theoretical knowledge in set practice and the students gets a different understanding of the task. It is a very popular feature of teaching.
