Dennis Olofsson, a student at the engineering program architecture at Lulea tekiniska University, presented his thesis Architecture in real time: visualization with game engines for increased value during the design process of archtecture. He has both evaluated and tested software and interviewed professionals in architecture.
"The advantage to use the technology game engines in architecture is that it allows for real-time visualization. This means that computer-generated images produced so quickly that they are perceived as a completely confluent process, which in turn allows for interactivity. Being able to use this in architecture has several advantages such as a free exploration of the projected building, or the ability to change the content in the form of various alternative solutions", says Dennis Olofsson.
In this thesis, it has also emerged that the level of detail in the initial sketch phase can be of great importance for the final result. It can be about even be an advantage to initially stick to simple sketches with less detail.
"Many architects believe that you can lock at a specific formulation of creating overly detailed shots early. My recommendation is to use the game engine tools in the first phase of a project with a low degree of detail", says Dennis Olofsson
