Swedish Waste Management Association's Scholarship for best degree project 2021

Jasmine Nordenström, who studied for a master's degree in natural resources engineering at Luleå University of Technology, has together with two other students been awarded the Swedish Waste Management Association Scholarship for best MSc thesis in 2021.

"It is of course incredibly flattering to receive recognition from such a significant industry organization as the Swedish Waste Management Association. I really encourage students to move forward with their own ideas as it will be a better degree project if you write about a subject for which you feel a personal commitment", says Jasmine Nordenström.

Jasmine's thesis was about the important technology Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). The CCS technology is considered very important to develop and implement to slow down the climate change, according to the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the EU, and the Swedish government. Today, Jasmine works as a project engineer at Blucarbon Solutions in Stockholm with questions related to CCS.

"Thanks to my degree project, I currently work with Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) full time in a small start-up company. We help operators in cogeneration, the cement industry, paper and pulp mills and refineries to investigate the possibility of integrating carbon dioxide capture into their existing production process. This is my dream job and I look forward to being involved in developing the company and putting Sweden on the map for full-scale CCS projects", says Jasmine Nordenström.

Motivation of the jury

Carbon dioxide capture has recently received a lot of attention in the debate on how we should reduce our carbon dioxide emissions. The degree of technical maturity and the ability to integrate the separation into current processes is crucial for full-scale plants with carbon dioxide separation to be able to be put into operation before 2045, when Sweden aims to achieve carbon neutrality. This thesis investigates the possibility of integrating carbon dioxide capture at Sävenäs waste cogeneration plant in Gothenburg by studying different separation techniques and comparing these with regard to energy consumption, environmental impact and economic advantages and disadvantages associated with reduced carbon dioxide emissions and reduced energy production.

The supervisor for the degree project was Anders Lagerkvist, professor in Waste Science and Technology at Luleå University of Technology. External supervisor was Lia Detterfelt at Renova.
