"I feel very happy and confident with my choice of career"

Published: 14 April 2018

Yazmila B. Mäkelä 37 years from Kiruna is studying at the distance programme BSc in maintenance engineering.

What is it like to study at Luleå University of Technology?

I study this program on distance, we use a learning management system called Fronter which works as a viritual classrooms. We also have a physical classroom in Kiruna Learning Centres, where we have access to computers, video, printers and so on.

The teachers are dedicated and helpful. The severity of the studies is different from high school because the pace is higher and you get a lot of free planning of your studies but you also have a big responsibility and you have to be disciplined.

What are your plans after studying?

My plans after graduation is to find a job that is stimulating and creative where I get the opportunity to take responsibility and influence. Preferably in a large company.

I feel very happy and confident with my choice of career. The demand for maintenance engineers will become bigger and bigger.

I would like to stay in Kiruna and work. I could also imagine working abroad since the training gives me a good basis for doing so.

Do you have any advice for future students?

If you want to succeed with your studies you have to plan the studietime well, study hard and be stubborn. Leisure time is very important for recovery, then you have the opportunity to hang out with friends, exercising, etc. It would be great if more girls apply for this education, engineering courses is not as difficult as you think.
