Master programme in Tribology of Surfaces and Interfaces

This is a unique world class European Master's program in Tribology within Mechanical engineering. The aim of the education is to train only the very best students so they can either continue to train as PhD students (Doctoral level) or seek technology prestigious positions worldwide as engineers.

As Tribology is a very multidisciplinary research and education topic, Luleå University of Technology, together with the Universities of Ljubljana, Slovenia, Leeds, UK, and Coimbra, Portugal, are the most suitable combination for a highly ambitious program which is planned for these two years.

Description

You will spend the first semester of the first year at the University of Leeds (UK) and the second semester at Ljubljana (Slovenia). This will give you a good start to your education at postgraduate level i.e., an advanced level in tribology, and in addition a cultural experience and a network of contacts with students from around the world.. The courses in the first year will address fundamental aspects such as lubrication and lubricants, corrosion and maintenance (with respect to different type of materials, e.g. metallic alloys, ceramics, polymers and composites). These fundamental courses are then complemented with your choice of courses with a higher degree of specialization in the second year of your education. You will also be given the chance to further your skills in the experimental methods used in Tribology.

In the second year, for your third semester, you can choose between Luleå University of Technology in Sweden and Coimbra University in Portugal. In this semester you will take a very experimental "hands on" approach to develop your skills to work as an engineer in the related subjects within Tribology. You will also undertake a comprehensive project course during the third semester. Projects are developed as a part of ongoing fundamental based research projects or as part of industry related and more applied topics in collaboration with our industrial partners. All of these partners are involved in Tribology or related subjects as part of their core business, which means that the interest in your contribution will be high. Linking projects to your master thesis (the final (fourth) semester in year 2), will give you the opportunity to work with something that interests you for a longer period of time. All teaching during 2 years is in English. After the two first semesters, there will be an opportunity for summer jobs at many companies in the TRIBOS industrial network.

After completing your studies you will have the knowledge and ability to develop solutions in tribological interfaces, lubrication, lubricants, wear and friction mechanisms (from nano-to macro-scale). You will also have skills in language and cultural knowledge from several European universities and companies.

Entry requirements

Bachelor degree of at least 180 credits or equivalent, which includes courses of at least 60 ECTS in one of the following areas: Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or equivalent, and a minimum of 22,5 ECTS in mathematics. Basic required knowledge in mathematics: M0029M (Calculus for beginner), M0030M (linear algebra and calculus) and M0031M (linear algebra and differential Equations) OR similar knowledge in mathematics is required.
