Master Programme in Wood Technology

120 Credits, Programme, master's level
This is a unique Master's program focusing on Timber Design and Wood as a Construction Material as well as Material Modification/Design. After graduation you will be well suited for a worldwide career in Research and Development in the wood industry or offered positions as PhD-student.

Timber Design is the key concept in the program, courses are designed to provide core competencies strongly linked to the production of environmentally sustainable and economically competitive products made of wood. You can choose between three subjects to specialize in; Timber Design, Wood Material Development and Modification or Process Development. Beside an academic career as a scientist can typical employers be found among the industrial builders, manufacturer of building component, joinery industry, sawmill industry and manufacturers of machine and measurement technology systems.

Basically all wood and sawn timber produced, ends up in some form of timber structure either as a building, joinery product or as furnishing.

Seen as an engineering material, wood is a lightweight and durable advanced fiber composite. The technical challenge is to understand and mastering the in-built variation of the wood features and its hygroscopic behavior.

The program has three main areas to choose to specialize in; Timber Design, Wood Material Development and Modification or Process Development.

Former students emphasize that it is the first training where they really are allowed to pursue their own projects and really given the chance to immerse themselves in a self-chosen subject. The ambition is that all projects shall be of such quality that they can be published in a scientific journal or presented at an international conference, so far a very successful ambition.

A maximum of five students will be admitted each semester. The expectations at these students are high; they should show initiative in their projects, be committed to and take great responsibility in their own learning process. The teaching is based on active and individual tutoring of each student by our professors, based on the student's learning needs and project objective.

50% of the courses are instructor-led problem-based project courses in which the student obtain a unique specialization, the remaining 50% are more traditional, providing a wider theoretically knowledge base.

When possible the students will, via the project courses, be involved in larger on-going research project and thereby given the opportunity to work side-by-side with our researchers.

All teaching is in English.

Labour market

The program is a preparation for postgraduate studies worldwide. If you aim at an industrial career, there is a pronounced need of wood specialist within the branches of; industrialized timber constructions, joinery industry, sawmills and manufacturers of machines and measurement equipment.
