What is ranking?
International rankings measure university excellence in research, education and collaboration. There are a number of prestigious global ranking lists presented on this page. Ranking lists can influence the attractiveness of universities for student affairs, researchers and staff.
Shanghai Ranking
The Shanghai Ranking, or Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), is a prestigious global ranking of universities. The ranking focuses primarily on research and academic achievements, with a strong emphasis on factors such as the number of published articles, citations, Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals linked to the university. The ARWU is published annually in August.
QS World University Rankings
The QS World University Rankings is one of the world's most recognized rankings of universities, designed by the British research firm Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). It offers a comprehensive global comparison of higher education institutions. The ranking is based on factors such as academic reputation, employer ratings, faculty resources, international diversity and research impact. QS publishes its main ranking annually in June, with specialized lists for specific subjects and regions following throughout the year.
US News & World Report
U.S. News & World Report is an American publication known for its annual rankings of universities, hospitals and other departments. The rankings, published in September for US universities and later in the fall for international institutions (Global Universities Rankings)
NTU Rankings
The NTU Rankings, or Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities, is a global university ranking developed by National Taiwan University. It focuses entirely on the quality and impact of research, with indicators such as the number of scientific publications, citations and achievements in specific research areas. The ranking is published annually in October.
The Stanford list
The Stanford List "science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators" is an annual analysis and ranking of researchers globally, developed by researchers at Stanford University in collaboration with Elsevier. It uses a comprehensive methodology based on citations, h-indexes, co-authorship and other indicators to assess the impact of researchers in different disciplines. The ranking is usually published in October and is used to identify outstanding researchers and analyse research quality globally. The list highlights the top 2% of researchers in different fields, both in the last year and during their lifetime.
The IVA list
The IVA List (Academy of Engineering Sciences List) is a ranking of Sweden's most outstanding engineers and researchers in technical and scientific fields. The list is published by the Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) and aims to highlight individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of science and technology, both nationally and internationally. The list includes people from a wide range of disciplines, from academic leaders and researchers to people from business and industry.
