Fiction across the curriculum
The aim of the project is to contribute knowledge about methods for developing reading ability and attitudes towards reading by using shared works of fiction across all subjects in lower secondary education.
Who are we?
The project is led locally at Nya Läroverket by Lead Teacher Camilla Sundberg Thurfjell. Teachers from all subject areas at the school are involved in the project. The academic lead is Professor Stefan Lundström at Luleå University of Technology.
Focus of the ULF project
The project takes as its starting point the so-called “reading crisis”, meaning that young people are reading less and facing increasing challenges in reading comprehension. In addition, teachers report declining levels of engagement and perseverance in schoolwork. This makes it increasingly difficult for pupils to achieve the learning objectives in many subjects.
At Nya Läroverket, reading will be a key focus area in the coming years. Together with the entire lower secondary teaching team, the project will trial teaching methods aimed at counteracting negative trends in reading.
Aim of the project
The aim of the project is to contribute knowledge about methods for developing reading ability and attitudes towards reading by using shared works of fiction across all subjects in lower secondary education.
Implementation and documentation
The project is carried out by having pupils read the same work of fiction across several subjects. Teaching begins with the reading of the book, and through a shared pedagogical approach, a holistic view of learning is fostered while promoting pupil engagement.
Documentation includes pupil surveys and interviews, as well as teachers’ reflective logs and workshops.
Dissemination of results
The results will initially be disseminated locally within Nya Läroverket’s schools and subsequently through presentations at educational conferences, both locally and nationally. The project will also result in a co-authored academic article.
