Berry AI: Teaching Machines to See the Forest – and the Berries
At Luleå University of Technology, within the Robotics and AI group, our BerryAI project is harnessing the power of AI and robotics to revolutionize how we interact with nature – starting with something as small (and delicious) as berries.
Right now, we're in the thick of the forest, gathering a wide range of berry images taken in real-world conditions:
📷 Different types of terrain
🌤️ Varying lighting environments
🌿 Naturally growing berry clusters
These images are being used to train machine learning models to detect and classify berries accurately, even in complex or low-visibility environments. It’s a key step toward enabling autonomous robots to assist in sustainable berry picking—supporting rural economies and reducing the need for manual labor in remote areas.
The project is still in its training phase, but we're already seeing promising results. Stay tuned as we blend deep tech with deep forests to build smarter, greener solutions!
