Impact of noise exposure on productivity and competitiveness
Workplace noise poses serious health risks, impacting productivity, profitability, and employee well-being. Many workers face noise levels that hinder conversation, leading to hearing damage, stress, and fatigue. Effective noise control measures, advanced hearing protection, and raising awareness can enhance performance, health, and safety.
About the research
Noise is a prevalent workplace health issue with significant consequences. In Sweden, 22% of workers face noise levels that hinder normal conversation for at least a quarter of their work time. Noise-induced injuries account for 17% of approved occupational diseases, leading to human suffering, production losses, and high costs. Beyond hearing damage, prolonged exposure to high noise levels causes stress, fatigue, and cognitive strain, negatively affecting performance, creativity, and motivation while increasing accident risks.
High noise levels reduce creativity, impair learning, and lower endurance. Studies also link noise exposure to high blood pressure and stress-related ailments. Providing workers with control over noise, such as level-dependent hearing protection (LDHP), mitigates these effects by preserving situational awareness and communication while reducing cognitive load. LDHP, now more advanced, offers improved sound quality, comfort, and functionality for long-term use.
Despite research, awareness of noise's impact on productivity, health, and profitability remains low. Prioritizing quieter technology and effective noise management fosters safer, more productive workplaces, reduces costs, and improves employee well-being, helping organizations attract and retain talent.
Benefits for small and medium-sized enterprises
For SMEs, noise significantly impacts productivity, profitability, and employee health but is often overlooked. Addressing noise brings key benefits regarding:
- Productivity – by boosting creativity, fewer errors, and better quality with quiet tech.
- Profitability – by energy-efficiency, low-maintenance, quieter machines improve operator focus and reduce costs by minimising errors.
- Health – by better communication, reduced stress, and fewer accidents. Reduced stress, fatigue, and accident risks.
Project goals
The project aims to raise awareness among employees and management about the impact of workplace noise on productivity, profitability, and health. It seeks to implement strategies that give individuals better control over noise exposure, including the use of level-dependent hearing protection and prioritizing effective noise control measures. By conducting a needs analysis, the project will assess the benefits of noise control in improving productivity and well-being for companies associated with Norrlandsnavet.
Additionally, it will promote investment in noise-reducing technologies and advanced hearing protection to enhance communication and situational awareness. The project will evaluate the impact of these interventions on productivity, profitability, and health, aiming to provide actionable insights. Ultimately, it aspires to position noise management as a key driver of workplace success, with findings shared through accessible formats and publications to encourage broader industry adoption of best practices.
