Beehives—Presence of Contaminants and Methods to Improve Overwintering

The project is investigating the conditions for sustainable beekeeping in Norrland, particularly in its inland regions. Taking into account the climate and natural environment of the area, the project aims to develop knowledge that enhances beekeeping’s potential to contribute to biodiversity, local food production, and rural development.

Beekeepers in the Norrland Interior

Beekeepers in the inland regions of Norrland operate under conditions that differ from the rest of Sweden, with long winters, a short flowering season, and limited access to nectar. At the same time, there are opportunities to develop sustainable beekeeping due to the absence of pollution and parasites.

The project will investigate the ecological and practical conditions for beekeeping in Norrland and develop knowledge and recommendations tailored to northern conditions. The results are intended for small and medium-sized beekeeping businesses with the aim of contributing to improved overwintering and increased production, which can lead to profitable and sustainable operations.

The results will be presented in the beekeepers’ journal and at meetings and webinars.
