About the Project

Small cultural organizations play a crucial role in Norrbotten’s appeal, identity, and development. At the same time, many of them face growing financial challenges as public resources dwindle and the need for alternative funding increases. In this project, researchers at Luleå University of Technology are investigating how small cultural and arts organizations in Norrbotten can strengthen their long-term sustainability without compromising their core artistic and cultural values.

The project is based on interviews and dialogue with nine cultural organizations throughout Norrbotten, in both coastal and inland municipalities. By gathering insights from organizations such as museums, art galleries, theaters, and cultural institutions, new knowledge is being generated about how small organizations manage financial uncertainty, accountability requirements, and the need for new revenue streams.

An important goal is to identify strategies, working methods, and practical tools that can help small and medium-sized organizations meet financial challenges. The project will also create opportunities for knowledge exchange, networking, and learning among organizations that often work with similar issues but under different conditions.

In the longer term, the results will contribute to a stronger and more resilient cultural life in Norrbotten. By highlighting best practices and developing new perspectives on finance and organizational development, the project can provide valuable support to small and medium-sized organizations that wish to remain attractive, relevant, and viable actors in the region’s future social development.
