From master’s studies to cyber security career
While completing his Master’s in Cyber Security at Luleå University of Technology, Nenad Sekulic is now working as a junior cyber security consultant at the consultant company, CGI. With a background in system science and experience from industry, he chose to deepen his expertise in security, a decision that led him into one of the fastest growing fields in tech.
What made you choose to study Cyber Security at Luleå University of Technology?
"I have always been fascinated by how things work “under the hood”, the process of building, breaking, and improving systems. As my interest in IT deepened during my bachelor’s degree, I realised that cybersecurity is the backbone of any functional system, regardless of its size or purpose. I wanted to move from managing systems to securing them. When researching master’s programmes, Luleå University of Technology stood out because it offered the most specialised and tailored programme. It didn't just touch on security, it focused deeply on the technical and strategic aspects I was looking for."
What have you learned, and how is it relevant to the industry today?
"I have found AI Security and Rust programming to be incredibly relevant for the current market. However, my personal favourite has been Quantum Cryptography. It is a fascinating look into the future of data protection. I have attended several IT conferences recently, and I have yet to encounter a cyber security topic being discussed in the industry that has not already been covered in our curriculum. The programme is very much in sync with modern requirements."
What is it like to study cyber security, and how have you experienced the online format?
"To be honest, it is demanding. The programme is rigorous, and the depth of the subjects requires a high level of dedication and hard work. It is a challenge, but a very rewarding one. The online studies work very well, the digital infrastructure makes the experience seamless. It offers the flexibility I need to manage my professional life while still feeling fully engaged with the coursework."
How did the programme help you get a job in cyber security?
"The Cyber Challenge, organised by the Swedish Defence University, is a perfect networking opportunity. It allowed me to connect with major stakeholders, government agencies, and high-ranking officials. It is a high-visibility event where you can truly stand out to potential employers. I recently began a new chapter in my career as a junior cyber security consultant at CGI, a role I am very excited about."
What career opportunities are available after the programme and what advice would you give to future students?
"The field is immense. Depending on your interest, you can move into technical roles like cyber security engineering, pen-testing, and red teaming, or focus on the strategic side with governance, risk and compliance (GRC).
I would tell future students that they are making the right choice. The cyber security market is expanding rapidly, and the demand for specialised skills is higher than ever. Luleå University of Technology provides the tools you need to succeed in that landscape."
