About the course
The teaching consists of lectures, laboratory sessions and seminar assignments. The labs are presented orally and may have a deadline for submission.
Course content
- Basic knowledge about wireless communication
- sensor networks (IEEE 802.15.x protocols, e.g., Bluetooth, ZigBee)
- Local wireless networks (IEEE 802.11x protocols)
- Mobile networks (LTE, WiMax)
- Mobility in wireless networks (Mobile IP, mobile ad-hoc networks, delay-tolerant networks)
- Hot research topics in the field of wireless networks
- Network simulation
At the end of the course you will be able to
- Explain the elements of modern radio transmission technology.
- Calculate the size of radio transmission areas.
- Explain the "hidden/exposed terminal" problem and explain the difference between MAC protocols in wireless and wired networks.
- Describe the channel congestion problem in the MAC and transport layer.
- Compute path with the famous Bellman-Ford and Dijkstra path selection algorithms and identify path selection protocol problems in wireless networks.
- Explain the concepts behind reactive and proactive route selection protocols in wireless networks.
- Explain the concepts behind geographic and content-based routing protocols in wireless networks.Identify the problems of using transport protocols in multi-hop wireless networks.
- Simulate TCP and UDP in a wireless environment and different routing protocols in a network simulator and measure performance parameters such as throughput, packet loss rate.
- Explain the principles behind the network architectures WiMax, Zegbee and Bluetooth, LTE.
