Applied computer security

This course will give you an in-depth understanding of computer security architecture in terms of its technologies, functions and usage.

About the course

During the course, students work on tasks individually and in groups. For group activities, students collaborate with each other using various tools. The course material covers basic concepts, norms and functions of computer security and their importance and scope. Students will study and apply security concepts in the design of solutions to achieve computer security. In order to design appropriate security solutions, students must first gain knowledge of current solutions through research. Students will also learn about the role of computer security in organizations' IT infrastructure.

The lectures cover analysis and design of computer security now and in the future, security concepts, research techniques, and how to integrate computer security into an organization's security policy.

The student platform Canvas is used to download course materials, information and assignments. Knowledge is shared and created during the course through virtual meetings with teachers and other students for discussion, supervision, group work and seminars.

Course content

The course covers basic concepts, norms and functions, and applications in computer security. The course consists of content related to different aspects of computer security, such as user authentication, operating system security, malware and data encryption, with applications to organizational security. The course has a narrow but in-depth focus on computer security architecture in terms of technology, function and use. The current technology is treated from a practical point of view, so that students will learn to analyse and design security solutions within the framework of an organization. Different situations and security concepts are covered in order for students to learn how to apply the right computer security solutions. Current academic and theoretical developments are also covered, to help students understand what new features may emerge in the future. The course also studies how to conduct research to find current solutions and anticipate future developments.

• Identify and explain basic concepts, norms, meanings and functions in the field of computer security.
• Make an overview of academic currents and knowledge development in computer security.
• Analyse a computer security architecture within the framework of an organization.
• Design a computer security model according to an organization's requirements.
• Make decisions on computer security plans and procedures in accordance with an organization's security policy.
