Blue-green infrastructure for sustainable stormwater management
Gain insight into the function of stormwater management facilities, both in terms of quantity/retention and quality/treatment. We will also highlight ecosystem services, design and operation and maintenance issues. The course is aimed at water and wastewater administrations and companies, municipalities, planners, consultants, landscape architects, industries that need to manage stormwater, etc.

Content of the course
The course deals with different technologies for stormwater management, including green roofs, ponds, wetlands, infiltration systems, prefabricated systems and biofilters. Their function, both as individual technologies and in larger systems, is described and discussed. In addition, the course covers ecosystem services that blue-green infrastructure can provide and how they can be a resource in the urban environment.
Approach
Technical function of blue-green infrastructure: self-study on the function of the different technologies and teacher-led seminar where the function of these technologies is discussed. Blue-green infrastructure as part of a larger system: which facilities complement each other and how, where are they placed in the catchment area and what are their costs. Exercises complemented by a seminar Ecosystem services and design of multifunctional GI: opportunities and possible conflicts of interest. Self-study.
The course is structured as follows:
Self-study: approx. 12 hours
Meetings: about 8 hours
Submissions and examination: 20 hours
In order to pass the course
- Assignment: short literature study on a BGI technique for stormwater management and preparatory tasks in canvas.
- Active participation during the seminars
- Final quiz
Teachers
Godecke Blecken is a professor in Urban Water Engineering and has been working with BGI since 2005. He has researched stormwater treatment and retention with BGI. Specific focus has been on function in different climates, long-term function and maintenance, treatment of "new" pollutants and the role of vegetation for treatment. He is the author of several Swedish reports and recommendations for dimensioning of BGI.
