Data acquisition for As-built building information modelling
Learn the workflows needed to acquire successful point clouds that can be directly imported into BIM models for accurate As-built information for the Architecture, Engineering and Construction Industry! You will also learn how to data-enrich BIM models for use in building and property management and operations.

Course structure
Module 1:
- Laser data collection
- Preparation workflow
- Acquisition workflow
- Laser scanner use and scanning interfaces
- Interface for point cloud registration
- Point cloud registration, report and export
Module 2:
- As-built data enriched BIM model from point clouds.
- Point cloud import Model geo-location and orientation
- Customized building components
- Model construction
- Data enrichment
Scope of the course: 30 hours
The course is structured as follows: self-study (23 hours) and online meetings (4 hours), on-site practice (3 hours Ca - needs booking).
In order to pass the course
You must pass both modules by demonstrating that you can: Record and produce consistent and accurate point clouds. Export point clouds in different file formats. Import point clouds into a BIM modeler and produce data-enriched As-built BIM models.
Teachers
Oscar Gamez, lecturer and researcher at Luleå University of Technology. He is an accomplished architect and holds an MSc from "École d'Architecture de Nancy" and a PhD in Architectural Sciences from "Université de Lorraine", both in France. His research interests cover digital fabrication applied to wood construction, parametric design, building life cycle management and building information modelling. Oscar has been involved in research aimed at improving digital workflows to integrate BIM in facilities management, building life cycle and building operation and maintenance. As a practicing consultant and former CEO of his own company, Oscar has an insight into workflows from design to construction, along with the information that clients, architects, engineers and other stakeholders need and share in the manufacture and operation of buildings. Oscar has published several works in peer reviewed journals and conferences. He has also been a reviewer for the Building Research and Information Journal.
Frida Thuresson is a landscape architect from SLU (Alnarp) and a PhD student at Luleå University of Technology. Frida is engaged in research and teaching applied to immersive virtual environments and participatory design as a means for participatory-supported decision-making. Frida is currently working on building a participatory platform tailored for subarctic cities like Piteå and Luleå to develop and boost their participatory design environments, for which LiDar and photogrammetry sources are required.
