Leadership for nurses
This is a course for nurses who want to develop their leadership and thereby contribute to safe care and a strengthened profession! You will get to share experiences from some of Sweden's foremost leaders in nursing. Reflect together with colleagues and develop your leadership, not only on an individual level but also more broadly in the workplace.

- Leading as a profession
- Lateral violence in the nursing profession
- Nursing leadership in teams, management and organizations
- Dependent and independent nursing - an aspect of leading patient-centered nursing.
Course structure
The course runs over 5 weeks, where the workload is estimated at about one day/8 hours per week.
Two meetings, course start including lecture: 3 h, and a seminar at the end of the course: 3 h. Self-study including individual study assignments and two group meetings: 34 h.
A significant part of the course material consists of scientific articles in English.
To pass the course
To pass the course, attendance and/or activity at compulsory learning activities is required: course introduction, learning activities and final seminar.
Teachers
Josefin Bäckström External link, opens in new window. is a district nurse and doctor of medicine. She is a senior lecturer at Luleå University of Technology, and a researcher at Uppsala University. Her research and teaching focus is mainly aspects of leadership and organization in nursing, the doctoral thesis was about relatives of people with severe burns. Josefin has many years of experience in psychiatric care and has for several years combined her employment in academia with assignments in health care. She has worked with various forms of care and professional development in municipal and psychiatric care as well as at a hospital-wide level. She is currently participating in the international research project Magnet4Europe at Uppsala University Hospital, a project aimed at strengthening patient safety and developing organization and leadership for nursing. Josefin is since 2019 a board member of the Swedish Nurses Association (SSF).
