Eurocode 0 - Basis of structural and geotechnical design
This course is an introduction to the Eurocodes and specifically Eurocode 0 - Basis of structural and geotechnical design. The course will go through the background to the Eurocodes and what parts there are and how they are structured. The course will also take you through some important terms and definitions, general rules, the principles of limit state design, basic variables, and verification by the partial factor method.

Target audience
Early-career civil and structural engineers, final-year students, and allied professionals such as clients, manufacturers, constructors and relevant authorities. Some familiarity with basic structural design is helpful.
Course content
Introduction to Eurocode 0 – Basis of structural and geotechnical design. • General rules: basic requirements, structural reliability, consequences of failure. robustness, design service life, durability, sustainability, and quality management
• Principles of limit state design, including Ultimate Limit States (ULS), Serviceability Limit State (SLS), design situations, and verifications
• Basic variables: actions and environmental influences, material and product properties, and geometrical properties
• Verification by the partial factor method: design values of actions, resistance, material properties, and geometrical properties; combination of actions, partial factors for ULS, and verification criteria for SLS
How the course will be conducted
The course is based on self-study and consists of a few introductory films with accompanying text and image material, exercises and quizzes. To pass the course, it is necessary to pass the quizzes and final exam (quiz).
To pass the course you need to
To pass the course, all modules must be completed by passing the accompanying quizzes, and by passing the final final exam (quiz). Upon completion, a course certificate is available.
Presentation of the teacher
Martin Nilsson, Associate Professor in Structural Engineering in the Division of Structural and Fire Engineering at Luleå University of Technology. He has almost three decades of experience fromacademia on the structural mechanics, concrete structures, avoidance of cracking in early age concrete, with teaching and supervision from bachelor’s to PhD level.
