About the course
Understanding and maximizing place potential in urban planning
Successful placemaking means creating spaces that work for both tourists and residents, and with consideration for the environment and climate. This skill is becoming increasingly important as the need to create sustainable, attractive urban areas is better understood. If you are interested in learning more about climate impacts and opportunities in urban planning, this two-week course is for you.
Exploring the Urban Microclimate
In this course, you will take a closer look at how design policy and academic research influence best practices in urban and climate design. The training materials will give you a good grounding in placemaking for sustainable tourist destinations and residential areas, and help you analyse (and then maximize) the potential of places.
Study placemaking and microclimate in a structured way
The course explores three key themes, lays them out simply and gives you a clear understanding of how microclimate and urban areas interact. You start by learning about planning policy frameworks for urban design, from international agreements to local policies. This is followed by in-depth lessons on the theoretical foundations that help shape successful places. Finally, you will get to apply what you have learned to case studies involving a variety of sites, each with their own unique climate and urban design needs.
What will you learn?
By the end of the course you will be able to...
- Describe how successful public spaces contribute to sustainable development.
- Explain how policy and research influence best practice in urban and climate design.
- Explain how urban planning affects climate change.
- Improve the local microclimate of public space to improve human comfort through case studies.
