Supervision in doctoral education – AI as cheating or opportunity?
How is artificial intelligence transforming our role as supervisors in doctoral education? What happens to research competence, responsibility, and learning when generative language models become a natural part of the doctoral student’s toolbox?
In this seminar, Marcus Strömbäck Hjärne will begin with a presentation, using concrete examples to show how AI can be used—and possibly misused—in the context of questions concerning quality, transparency, and academic integrity. This will be followed by an in-depth discussion with Mikael Wiberg, where we will jointly explore the difficult questions we face as supervisors.
Marcus Strömbäck Hjärne – Educational developer at Luleå University of Technology, with a background as a PhD in behavioral science measurement and experience as a teacher, supervisor support specialist, and advocate for AI as a tool for learning in higher education.
Mikael Wiberg – Professor of Informatics at Umeå University. His research focuses on the intersection between humans and technology, with an emphasis on interaction design, digital materiality, and the future of academic practices. Wiberg is an internationally established researcher and a sharp voice in the ongoing conversation about the role of AI in academia.
