Best thesis in 2022
The Swedish Geotechnical Society's award for best degree project 2022 went to Anne Holtmeier, Luleå University of Technology. The award ceremony was held in March 2023. Anne studied The Master Programme in Civil Engineering, with specialization in mining and Geotechnical Engineering.
The work consists of numerical studies focused on the "installation" effects of the soil-cement columns. After a very extensive and well-structured literature study, she identified three zones around the pillars to be incorporated into her model. The thesis is related to Skanska's project Täby Park in Stockholm, where the use of cement columns was considered as ground improvement in a planned park environment
and under roads, while buildings will be supported by end-bearing piles. The basic conditions at this location have been used by Anne as the basis for her numerical models.
Anne's work is very extensive and is also well illustrated. The work is very well structured with clear research questions formulated at the beginning. Organized in the IMRAD manner, the report provides state-of-the-art, describes motivating chosen methods, presents results and analysis after a critical discussion and conclusion. In the conclusion, she returns to and answers the research questions posed.
Anne's oral presentation was delivered clearly and with great commitment. The imagery was exemplary in its clarity.

The Swedish Geotechnical Society
The Swedish Geotechnical Society (SGF) was founded in 1950 and consists of roughly 1,900 individual members. SGF's purpose is to promote the development of geoengineering with foundation engineering and environmental geoengineering in a national and international perspective.
