The 2023 Bergforsk awardees
During the conference Swedish Mining Innovation Research and Innovation Day, the Bergforsk foundation hands out awards to MSc and PhD students whose works are regarded to hold exceptionally high quality. Here is a short presentation of the awardees of 2023: Vitalis Chipakwe, Jonathan Rincon and Ingeborg Hjorth.
Best Doctoral thesis
Vitalis Chipakwe, Mineral Processing
Motivation: Vitalis Chipakwe´s PhD thesis is linked to reducing energy and water consumption during grinding and mineral processing which leads to higher process efficiency. His work is innovative with high scientific quality, with 5 articles published in high-ranked journals. His work is of strong relevance for the Swedish mining industry, and it has received significant attention in its field.
Supervisors: Saeed Chelgani, Tommy Karlkvist, Jan Rosenkranz
Best Licentiate thesis
Jonathan Jose Rincon Gamero, Ore Geology
Motivation: Jonathan Rincon’s licentiate thesis offers new insights into the exploration of polymetallic mineral deposits. His study provides a detailed analysis of the Rävliden North deposit: one of the most significant new discoveries in the classic Skellefte mining district. By combining in-situ trace element studies with detailed paragenetic analysis, new vectors to mineralization are defined which will help guide continued exploration. The research work is of excellent quality and contributes to the exploration of mineral deposits in the region.
Supervisors: Nils Jansson, Christina Wanhainen, Yousef Ghorbani, Helen Thomas
Best Master thesis
Ingeborg Hjorth, Ore Geology
Motivation: Ingeborg Hjorth investigated the distribution of cobalt in zinc ore from Zinkgruvan in Bergslagen. In her work, Ingeborg shows a great ability to integrate a number of different high-tech analytical methods in order to answer to what extent cobalt occurs as a lattice-bound component in sphalerite versus in cobalt minerals that could potentially be separated from the latter and potentially become a source of cobalt by-product. The study is of high relevance for both Swedish and European metal supply at a time when the supply of raw materials has become the focus of society's green climate transition.
Supervisor: Nils Jansson, Thomas Aiglsperger
