Taking a deep dive into good behaviour best thesis work
Three years of studies at Luleå University of Technology culminated in the award "best degree project" for nursing students Julia Alerby and Emma Forsgren. Now they bring lessons from the thesis work in their future jobs, and have gained more taste for research.
What does good treatment of patients mean? Julia Alerby and Emma Forsgren wanted to find out in their degree project.
- There is a lot in the literature about the importance of good treatment, but little about what it actually is. We wanted to investigate this further and compile it in our degree project, says Julia Alerby.
The conclusion was a complex picture where several parts together create a good treatment and conditions for good nursing, such as communication, respect and presence.
- It's about an overall picture of many small details. If we take the example of communication, it is not only about what you say, but also that you show that you are listening through eye contact and take the time to talk to patients, says Emma Forsgren.
"Three great years"
After three years of study, it is now time to summarize and go out into professional life. Both students go directly to work at Piteå Hospital, where they did their latest clinical training, VFU.
- It has been a very nice and good education. All courses are in some way useful, sometimes I have wondered about the connection to the practice, but you notice it when you are out on VFU, says Julia Alerby.
- It has been three great years at LTU but of course also tough and intense periods of study. Sometimes it has been a lot to take in especially for me who has not worked in health care before, but then it has also been important to be able to discuss with talented fellow students. It feels exciting to throw myself into working life now. I feel ready,' says Emma Forsgren.
Researchers possible future
The degree project has given a taste for research, something that Julia Alerby already saw as a possible future after a few years in the business. Receiving the 'best thesis' award was an appreciated acknowledgement of her hard work.
- 'We were almost in tears, it feels so honorable. It's great to get this confirmation of the work we have done," says Emma Forsgren.
Themotivation for the "best degree project" award:
The degree project is an integrated knowledge overview that includes 29 scientific studies. The area that was studied provides important knowledge for nurses in all areas of activity. The aim was to compile knowledge about what characterizes a good treatment of patients in inpatient care. Good care consists of good personal and professional characteristics, good communication, respect and integrity, time and presence and mutual interaction. A good treatment consists of several dimensions, when nurses use the knowledge and combine different dimensions, conditions are created for good nursing care in the meeting with patients. The thesis is well-written, independently conducted and critically reflective and maintains a high scientific level.
