Large grant for research on conversations about death
A large establishment grant from Forte has been granted to Malin Eneslätt, Senior Lecturer in Nursing at Luleå University of Technology, for a project on a tool to support conversations about the end of life.
The grant is awarded for the project: DöBra-kortleken 2.0: Exploring the promotion of early, proactive end-of-life conversations through co-creation and testing of a digital conversation tool. The project is funded for three years starting in January 2024.
Support for what feels difficult
DöBra is a national research program that raises questions about dying, death and grief to enable preparation for the encounter with the end of life. The new project will explore a digital version of the conversation tool.
- "I am incredibly happy about this funding for the project, which will mean that we can continue an almost 10-year-long effort to develop the DöBra card game to stimulate conversations about what can be important at the end of life. Talking about dying and death can be difficult, but our previous research on the paper version of the card game among the general public, the Sami people and in elderly care has shown that it can be a good tool for stimulating such conversations and reflections. As an individual and family member, having the opportunity to prepare for the end of life in advance can lead to the patient and family member being able to be a more active discussion partner as the care approaches the end of life," says Malin Eneslätt.
High demand
Due to high demand, the DöBra card game has also been made available to the public for purchase through a collaboration with Volante Book Publishers and has sold over 4000 copies since 2018. The Vrije University in Brussels is pilot testing their version of the deck. Through collaboration with a number of social actors, a Swedish digital version will be co-created, which will make the conversation tool available to even more people. The digital version allows for more adaptations as requested.
- Our collaboration with community organizations and potential end users will be extremely important in the development of the DöBra card game 2.0, says Malin Eneslätt.
The project is conducted in collaboration with research colleagues in the field of psychology at Luleå University of Technology, Vrije Universiteit in Brussels, Karolinska Institutet, Äldrecentrum in Stockholm and Glesbygdsmedicinskt centrum in Storuman. The project will also work closely with social actors such as Young Cancer, the Dementia Association, the National Organization of Pensioners PRO, Kalix Municipality, Piteå Municipality and Volante Book Publishers. The project has previously received seed funding from the strategic research area PRECISE at Luleå University of Technology.
