5-TEK increases girls' interest in technical education
Luleå University of Technology has invited 100 technology-interested girls and non-binary students who are in their second or third year of high school, from Malmö in the south to Kiruna in the north, to participate in 5-TEK on September 20th-21st. Luleå University of Technology organizes the much appreciated event 5-TEK for the fourth time, with the aim of inspiring more people to choose technical educations.
"I am currently attending a technical high school and have already looked at various echnology universities. And then I received information about the 5-TEK in the mail, it was a great opportunity for me to find out more," says Elenora Käck, student at the technology program in Västerås.
During two inspiring days, the 5-TEK participants get to meet students at Luleå University of Technology, attend a classic student sit-in and learn more about the university's various courses in a mini fair. The young people can also attend several workshops such as the "chocolate factory" where they can create a chocolate praline in digital 3D drawing, or "build a house" where they get to design a house that is good for both people and the environment and then draw up the house and build a model of it. In the workshop "Code, connect and blink", through collaboration, the young people get to connect and code a circuit board that causes an LED light to blink when it knocks on, for example, a bench or door. That and much more - all to show the great breadth and variety of technology.
"Meeting all new girls and people and making new contacts has really been the most fun for me. It has also been fun to see the standard at universities, how it is and works," says Tilde Monrad, student at the natural science program in Nyköping.
The 5-TEK event was started with a government decision where all colleges and universities must promote and broaden recruitment. Today, there is a higher percentage of boys on many of the technical educations, something that Luleå University of Technology wants to change. 5-TEK therefore aims to inspire girls and non-binary women to apply to technical educations and not feel limited by gender norms.
“It is an important opportunity for us as a university to show the scope of our technical educations, with close collaborations together with companies and industries, not least within the green transition. Our courses are for everyone and at Luleå University of Technology we promote diversity among teachers, researchers, students, and other employees. Our hope with 5-TEK is that more people will discover our technical educations, and choose us as a university, it is not least important because of the great need for skills that exists in Northern Sweden with the green transition and a society that people want live and live in," says principal Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn.
