Commemorative coin for the production of green iron
Luleå University of Technology has contributed to the production of the green iron used to produce a few hundred commemorative coins for the company GreenIron. Now everyone directly involved as well as Vice-Chancellor Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn were each rewarded with a commemorative coin produced with GreenIron's new technology.
The commemorative coin is produced using fossil-free technology and through a collaboration with companies and universities from Sweden, Finland and Poland. The material the coin is made of is fossil-free iron from Kaunis Iron's iron ore and recycled metal from the Swedish manufacturing industry recycled by Fortum Waste Solutions in Kumla. The ore concentrate has been pelletized by Process Metallurgy at Luleå Technical University, s a result of the Process Metallurgy that has been helping GreenIron for a few years to agglomerate, i.e. produce briquettes or pellets from iron ore. The pellets have then been reduced with hydrogen in GreenIron's patented hydrogen-based technology to produce fossil-free metals from ore and waste streams. Polish SECO/Warwick is the manufacturer of GreenIron's patented ovens.
It was Bo Björkman, senior professor in the research subject of process metallurgy, who handed out the commemorative coins to involved researchers at Luleå University of Technology as a thank you from GreenIron for a well-executed collaboration.

"The commemorative coin is a good example of how important collaboration is to reach new fossil-free goals and increased circularity within the industry. The coin symbolizes a fossil-free future that will take shape on a commercial scale during the winter of 2023/24 through establishment in Sandviken", says Edward Murray, CEO of GreenIron H2.
The researchers in the subject of process metallurgy who were rewarded were Britt-Louise Holmqvist, Andreas Lennartsson, Fredrik Engström and Caisa Samuelsson.
"There are many people in both business and academia who have been involved in this project. Now some of these have been honored for their efforts with this commemorative coin", says Bo Björkman.
Process metallurgy include sustainable production of metals and raw materials in metal production and the generation, control, treatment and use of residues from the process industry.
Green steel is produced without generating CO2 emissions and by using fossil-free electricity to produce hydrogen.
