More than SEK 500 000 to engineering students at Luleå University of Technology
Engineers of Sweden and Luleå University of Technology have signed a strategic collaboration agreement, the purpose of which is to award targeted scholarships to engineering students whose degree projects contribute to the green transition. The first to receive these scholarships of SEK 50,000 each from the Environmental Fund are twelve students at Luleå University of Technology, whose theses show particularly high scientific potential and the possibility of practical application.
“I am delighted that through this collaboration we can provide extra financial support to engineering students whose degree projects contribute with solutions for the green transition. The innovative capacity of new generations of engineers points the way to a more sustainable future and lays the foundation for future employment opportunities," Ulrika Lindstrand says, President of Engineers of Sweden, the trade union for graduate engineers, and chair of the union's Environmental Fund.
There is a great number of interesting projects among the theses, of the awarded engineering students at Luleå University of Technology. One of these is being carried out in co-operation with Luleå Energi, which will convert its district heating production to fossil-free. This degree project will investigate how the new, green industrial initiatives in the Svartön industrial area in Luleå can be integrated into the existing district heating network and how the network and the remaining hot water centres outside the network should be adapted to interact with the intermittent waste heat from Svartön. Another project is about turning plastic into something useful, and another is about how you your self can build more sustainably. In addition, a thesis, carried out in collaboration with Nordic Strategy Partners, will contribute to the development of a completely new service in the space and mining industry to prevent major natural disasters in mine tailings ponds. The thesis is an important part of the development and launch of a completely new service that for the first time also uses satellites to monitor and manage these mine tailings ponds, which can cover areas of tens of square kilometres. This is something completely new and in demand in the mining industry and will be the first service in the world to combine satellites, drones and ground sensors for this purpose using AI and machine learning analyses.
“It's so great that there is so much interest in applying for these scholarships, and I'm proud of our civil engineering students who have resented interesting degree projects, with great development potential. Thanks to the scholarships from the Swedish Engineering´s Environmental Fund, our students who are pursuing a Degree of Master of Science in Engineering, now have the opportunity to apply their knowledge to new and important ideas about the green transition before they even graduate, Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn says, Vice-Chancellor at Luleå University of Technology.
The scholarship holders at Luleå University of Technology are students at the Master Programme in Sustainable Energy Engineering, Master Programme in Industrial and Management Engineering, Master Programme in Mechanical Engineering, Master Programme in Natural Resources Engineering, Master Programme in Sustainable Process and Chemical Engineering, Master Programme in Architectural Engineering, Master Programme in Engineering Physics and Electrical Engineering and Advanced Material Science and Engineering. The students will now receive special support from Luleå University's Arctic Business Incubator to increase the opportunities for practical application after the end of the programme in early summer 2024.
The Engineers of Sweden Environmental Fund is a foundation managed by Engineers of Sweden with an annual grant from Swedbank’s Humanfond. The foundation’s purpose is to promote projects intended to improve the physical environment in Sweden and its immediate area. Priority will be given to applicants who are members of Engineers of Sweden. Engineers of Sweden is a trade union and interest organisation for graduate engineers. The union has 169,000 members. It is a democratic organisation built on member influence. The union’s vision is that its members will develop the sustainable society of tomorrow.
