New WISE Fellow recruited to Luleå University of Technology
As of April 2024, Sadia Ilyas is employed as the second WISE Fellow at Luleå University of Technology. Sadia, with her broad expertise, will play a central role in advancing research in metallurgy and materials science.
Her research addresses both sustainability and materials science, particularly using the advanced hydrometallurgical extraction techniques and enabling the process as energy-efficient as possible with low carbon emission potentials. This includes the extraction of critical raw minerals, low-grade ores, and the recovery of strategic elements from post-consumer waste materials with direct applications to promote clean and green energy technologies.
"The current metal recycling rate of 20 percent is unsatisfactory when considering their increasing demands and criticality in new clean energy applications. The lack of efficient and easily operable technologies is a major factor contributing to the low recycling rate. Therefore, I see my role as crucial due to my expertise in metal recycling. WISE provides me with the opportunity to work in this direction within the network of academics, researchers, and industries looking to achieve the sustainable development goals," says Sadia Ilyas, Associate Professor in Process Metallurgy.
Notably, a WISE Fellow is a prestigious appointment within the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation's investment in materials and sustainability. Through WISE Fellows, Luleå University of Technology has the opportunity to strengthen the field with a young promising researcher who receives a research package including the recruitment of two PhD students and two postdocs. The WISE Fellow initiative extends over four years.
"Sadia joining us will be a significant addition to our research and our collaboration with Sweden's other researchers in WISE. Materials, process metallurgy and sustainability are three areas already associated with Norrbotten and Luleå University of Technology, and Sadia will also collaborate with researchers here at the university who can benefit from her expertise in hydrometallurgy and positive energy. For the subject of Process Metallurgy, Sadia will further contribute to strengthening research in hydro- and pyrometallurgy, which will be of great benefit to the Swedish metallurgical industry," says Fredrik Engström, subject representative for process metallurgy.
WISE is a research program funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW). The aim is to enable sustainable technologies with an impact on our society by understanding, creating and controlling complex materials with precision down to the individual atomic level.
