Ark2024 – Exploring the Role of Architecture in Arctic Transformation
The architecture group at Luleå University of Technology has now opened the Ark2024 exhibition, a profound investigation into the significance and potential of architecture in the rapidly changing Arctic.
The exhibition, running until the end of May, is based on three central hypotheses: that form follows the environment, that cities function as interconnected systems, and that nature constitutes essential infrastructure.
"In a world where millions of architectural projects are realised every year, whether in large cities or isolated areas, the key for us is to maintain a critical perspective on territorial transformation. It's about predicting, understanding, and problematising how our environments will develop. Instead of seeking definitive answers, we must focus on promoting critical questioning" says Stefano Tornieri, Senior Lecturer in Architecture.
Through an interdisciplinary approach, the exhibition highlights the importance of creative and analytical methods for building sustainable communities in this dynamic region. The exhibition gathers contributions from various courses such as sustainable urban design, urban design, the development of architecture, urban form, and technical architecture.
Nearly 40 students and researchers are participating in the exhibition, which is being organised for the first time. There are already plans to make this an annual tradition, aiming to become an important meeting place for architecture in Luleå.
"Students often do not see the connection between their work and the possibility of it being exhibited as a work of art, and that their work has not only technical value but also aesthetic value. The exhibition gives them the opportunity to see how different works can be woven together into a narrative, offering a broader perspective on the future of the Arctic where they live" says Agatino Rizzo, Professor and Head of Subject in Architecture.
The exhibition is part of the 2024 edition of the Luleå Biennial titled On the threshold of 1:1 that take place in Boden, Kiruna, Luleå and Messaure between 2 March – 26 May 2024.
