"You grow enormously as a person"
SI is a complement to regular teaching, where students themselves lead study groups in subjects such as physics and mathematics. We had a chat with Johannes Lindholm, who has been SI leader in mathematics this year.
Hi Johannes, tell us about yourself!
"My name is Johannes Lindholm, I study technical physics in year three and I am originally from Västerås."
What attracted you to Luleå University of Technology?
"That it was so far away from home, that you would get to try something completely new. I wanted to challenge myself and grow as a person."
Why did you become an SI leader?
"I have always liked math. Well, not really. In high school I didn't like it and had low grades. But during high school I got a good teacher and it became an incredible motivation. Then I became very good at math instead. I now liked math and I was motivated. Then I came here and I've gotten better and I've always liked helping others. As an SI leader, I get to do more math and also help others, of course I would apply for SI leader then. And it doesn't hurt to have a little extra money in your pocket as well!"
What has being an SI leader given you?
"It has been great fun! It's been especially fun when you realize that you've helped others. I have a great example of this during my first period as an SI leader. I had a student who had failed a course for four years, but she had never tried SI sessions before. But that period she went to us and then passed the exam. And she was so happy and came to us and thanked us for our help. Before that, it was mostly a fun thing to help others and study more math, then it became incredibly rewarding in a completely different way."
What would you say to someone who is thinking about becoming an SI leader?
"It varies from person to person what the attraction is. There are some who are passionate about math and want to continue with their interest. Others just want to be there to help others. If you like a specific subject like math or physics and like to help others, you should apply to become an SI leader. Then it provides extra income and a valuable experience too"
"You grow enormously as a person. I've been super nervous about speaking in front of other people. But after a year as an SI leader, I was one of the teachers at the plug, a prep course, and there I held a lecture for 100 students. It had never worked before, but now it was no problem!"
ABOUT SI
SI is a complement to regular teaching. It is a proven method that supports students to consolidate and process knowledge from lectures. The method is based on students who have studied the course in question before, leading study groups of about 5-15 students in an SI session.
