Meet our researchers: Maria wants to see a balanced use of our natural resources
Maria Pettersson is Professor of Law at Luleå University of Technology. Her research focuses on the function of legal regulations, for example in relation to mineral extraction, a highly topical issue in the context of the green transition.
What is your research about?
"My research topic is environmental and natural resources law. At the moment, the focus is on permit processes and the role of the environmental permit assessment, not least in the context of the green transition where there are many unanswered questions. Other than this, I am looking at different types of energy related legal issues, as well as legal prerequisites for, for example, the use of different types of waste and substances."
What makes your field so interesting?
"For me personally, it means that I can devote myself to the question of how we can balance different interests in such a way that we create conditions for both taking the environment into account and enabling technological and economic development, for example."
What is your dream as a researcher?
"I would like to see a development towards a balanced utilisation of our natural resources and if I can contribute to this, I am satisfied."
