The Climate Policy Council's mission is to evaluate how the Government's overall policy is compatible with the climate goals decided by the Parliment and the Government. As part of strengthening the Council's independence in relation to the Government, the Council submits proposals for new members to the Government, which then decides on the matter. Appointments are for a fixed term, normally for a maximum of six consecutive years for the chairperson and a maximum of three consecutive years for other members. This means that members are replaced with some regularity.
The Climate Policy Council is an independent, multidisciplinary expert body tasked with evaluating whether the Government's overall policy is leading to the achievement of the climate goals. The long-term goal is for Sweden to have no net emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere by 2045. Our mission also includes contributing to an increased discussion on climate policy in society.
