Nikolaos wins best paper award in conference workshop
Nikolaos Stathoulopoulos, Doctoral Student in Robotics and AI, recently attended one of the IROS workshops in Abu Dhabi and was granted the best paper award.
“It is a nice confirmation that my research is on the right track and encourages me to keep moving forward”, Nikolaos says.
The IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems workshop (IROS) is one of the two largest conferences in the robotics community. Each year it hosts around 40 workshops covering various areas of robotics.
Nikolaos Ph.D focusses on large-scale and long-term mapping using multi-robot systems. These systems face significant challenges especially as they scale which becomes increasingly complex. Multi-robot systems are incredibly important and can be applied in various scenarios such as autonomous driving, inspection, maintenance and search and rescue missions.
“It is very beneficial from a health and safety aspect. For instance, a robot could inspect open-pit mines, caves and so on rather than sending people in such areas which could be hazardous and even life-threatening at times”, Nikoloas explains.
Best Paper Award
Nikolaos won the best paper award at the “Standing the Test of Time” IROS workshop. In his paper he highlighted a critical, but often overlooked, aspect of LiDAR-based place recognition – the role of sampling space and its impact on performance. He also proposed an innovative solution to this problem, to optimise keyframe sampling for improved accuracy and efficiency.
“My research aims to develop techniques that enhance the efficiency, robustness, and longevity of these systems. In this particular article, we explore the concept of sampling space in place recognition, which is crucial for improving system performance in long-term missions”, Nikolaos says.
Nikolaos has just completed his second year of his doctoral studies but there is still much to do if he wants to make multi-robot systems operate more efficiently.
“While the Best Paper Award in a Workshop is a nice milestone, the true measure of our research will come from its recognition within the community and the adoption of our proposed solutions”, Nikolaos says.
