Jens Hardell Named Supervisor of the Year
Jens Hardell, Professor of Machine Elements at Luleå University of Technology, has been named Supervisor of the Year 2024. The award, presented by the Student Union and the doctoral student section, is a recognition of his outstanding contributions as a doctoral supervisor. This is not the first time his work has been acknowledged; he also received the same award in 2019.
"It feels, if possible, even more of an honor to receive this award once again. I am incredibly grateful and humbled that the doctoral students nominated and selected me; it’s one of the highest forms of recognition one can receive in doctoral education," says Jens Hardell.
A Valuable Confirmation of Appreciated Guidance
The award, established in 2008, aims to highlight supervisors who make a decisive difference for doctoral students. The nominations come directly from the doctoral students themselves, and the winner is chosen by a jury consisting of both Student Union representatives and doctoral students. For Jens Hardell, the award is a valuable acknowledgment that his supervision is appreciated and makes a difference.
"As a supervisor, it’s difficult to get sufficient feedback, but this award shows that I am on the right track. It gives me an opportunity to reflect and continue to develop in my role as a supervisor."
Committed Beyond His Own Supervision
A special mention in the jury’s statement highlights Jens Hardell's commitment to supporting all doctoral students, not just those he supervises directly. For him, it’s important that all students at the university feel seen and encouraged.
"Our doctoral students are our most important asset. My approach is to treat everyone the way I want to be treated myself, regardless of whether they are my own doctoral students or not."
Individualized Supervision for Each Doctoral Student
One of Jens Hardell’s guiding principles is to tailor his supervision to meet each doctoral student’s specific needs. He emphasizes the importance of creating a safe and respectful work environment where each doctoral student has the opportunity to develop at their own pace.
"Every doctoral student is unique, and my job is to help them grow into independent researchers. Setting clear expectations early on is a key to successful collaboration."
Jury’s Motivation:
The Doctoral Student Association, together with the Student Union, has decided to award Jens Hardell the title of 'Supervisor of the Year.' Jens thoughtfully adapts his mentorship to meet each student's unique needs, ensuring they receive guidance that best supports their individual development. His thoughtful approach to mentorship, focused on continuous growth and genuine care for students' success, exemplifies the qualities that an outstanding supervisor should possess.
