Best thesis in steel construction to Ola Bergstedt and Holger Berggren
During a ceremony at the Steel Construction Day, the scholarship for the best thesis in 2024 was awarded to Ola Bergstedt and Holger Berggren from Luleå University of Technology.
Citation
The thesis deals with raising the capacity of existing steel and concrete bridges. Achieved by preventing sliding between concrete slab and steel beams using radially resilient shear connectors in holes drilled from below. This design has been studied in more detail in the thesis work by linking physical experiments to simulation with the finite element program Abaqus. By calibrating the model's parameters against experimental data, greater knowledge has been obtained for the behavior of the structure type and for how future FE models should be performed.
The thesis is well written and deals with an area with strong potential for climatic and economic benefits, and where there is great potential for use of the results. The work is therefore well deserved of the prize as the best degree project in Steel Construction 2024.
The jury 2024

About the scholarship
The scholarship is awarded by the Institute of Steel Construction, this year for the 20th time. The purpose is to encourage students in the civil engineering programs in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering to choose to do their final degree project in the field of steel construction. The scholarship is funded by the Structor Foundation.
The winners will share SEK 50,000.
