"So many reasons to try a semester abroad"
During November 5-7 International Days was held at Luleå University of Technology, days that are intended to increase curiosity about studying abroad.
International Days is a recurring event on campus Luleå, where there are lectures and a fair where students from all over the world fill the corridor in the B-house and inform about life at their home university.
At the fair on November 6, we meet Axel Palmqvist who is studying applied AI civil engineering. He has previously studied two semesters at the University of Liège in Belgium. Now Axel is here because he is curious to do his master's thesis at Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan.
"There are so many reasons to try a semester abroad. It's a lot of fun and I feel that I have grown tremendously as a person. I'm more confident in myself and I've gained more self-confidence and I've made a lot of friends."
Axel talks to Tim Ufer from Germany, who did his PhD in cybersecurity with a focus on AI at Luleå University of Technology. Tim spent six months at Kyushu University which Axel is curious about.
"I try to give him some advice on what to expect. I've told him about the process of applying, my experiences there and what the university is like. The best thing about being in Japan was that I got to practice my Japanese. When you go to a country that doesn't speak English very well, it gives you an independence kick because you really have to make active choices in the country's home language to get by, you can't rely on them knowing English. So I've told you that it's more challenging to go far away like Japan, but it's also more rewarding in a different way."
So why is it so important to increase curiosity about studying abroad? Jenny Lundkvist, International Coordinator at the International Office explains.
"It's an added value when applying for jobs and is an incredible experience for personal development. Students meet other cultures learn new languages and at LTU there are great opportunities for study abroad as we have many contract universities around the world."
