New locking system increases security at the university
We are currently changing our locking systems at Luleå University of Technology, a work that will be completed in 2025 and facilitate security work on all our campuses.
Luleå University of Technology has been working intensively to develop our locking systems for the campus of the future. After completing pilot studies, security officers at the university have landed on an electromechanical solution for all our indoor locking cylinders.
"Some of us have access to between two and three thousand doors. So if you lose a key, it's inconvenient because it opens a security hole you can't close. With the new system, if a key is lost, you can just block it and make sure it is immediately unusable. This will be a big boost for the university", says Rickard Stewén, Head of Security at Luleå University of Technology.
First to test the new locking system was the Department of Computer Science, Electrical and Space Engineering. Subsequently, the Department of Social Sciences, Technology And Arts.
"At first they thought the keys were big and clumsy, but it took maybe two weeks and then we got feedback that it was the best thing we did. This system also limits, for example, who can enter your particular room on campus. The authorization can be programmed in detail into each key," says Stefan Carlsson, security coordinator at the university.
How it works
You as an employee will still be able to enter the buildings with your LTU card. Inside, all lock cylinders are changed, from mechanical lock cylinders to electromechanical. The electromechanical system allows the university to program each key. In total, about 4000 lock cylinders will be replaced in the coming year.
