Collaboration in focus at Nordic hydrogen conference
Luleå University of Technology recently hosted the Nordic Hydrogen Valleys Conference, where experts, researchers, public sector representatives, and industry leaders from across the Nordic region gathered to discuss the role of hydrogen in the green transition. The conference highlighted the importance of Nordic collaboration to develop sustainable hydrogen hubs and strengthen the region’s position as a global leader in sustainable energy systems. The event was organised by Nordic Energy Research.
A key topic of the conference was how hydrogen can be implemented more rapidly to help reduce carbon emissions in industry and create new opportunities for the energy transition. Cecilia Wallmark, Director of Luleå University of Technology’s hydrogen initiative, CH2ESS (Centre for Hydrogen Energy Systems Sweden), emphasised the importance of collaboration between research and industry.
“Hydrogen is one of the keys to achieving a fossil-free energy system. By working closely with industry, we can develop solutions that inform decision-makers in the short term and foster innovations with transformative potential in the longer term,” said Cecilia Wallmark.
The conference also underscored the significance of Nordic collaboration to share resources, technology, and expertise. It focused on five projects within the “Nordic Hydrogen Valleys as Energy Hubs” programme, where researchers and businesses jointly develop solutions spanning the entire hydrogen value chain. One of the outcomes of the conference is deeper cooperation between the various projects, involving all Nordic countries, with the aim of developing action plans to realise the benefits of hydrogen sooner. Topics discussed included the need to consider Indigenous communities, secure increased funding for implementation, and recognise the role and responsibility of policymakers in achieving overarching goals.
“This conference serves as a platform for innovation and collaboration, not only strengthening our position in the Nordics but also driving global progress. Hydrogen is a cornerstone of future energy systems, and Luleå University of Technology is at the forefront of this transition,” Cecilia Wallmark added.
CH2ESS Leading Northern Sweden’s Development
Luleå University of Technology plays a crucial role in developing hydrogen solutions through advanced facilities such as LTU Green Fuels and close collaborations with partners worldwide.
“The major investments in hydrogen in northern Sweden lay the foundation for the green transition. Through our research and partnerships, we can test and develop solutions that make a real difference for both industry and the environment,” said Cecilia Wallmark.
Northern Sweden, with its large-scale industrial investments in fossil-free steel and hydrogen, has a unique opportunity to become a global model for sustainable energy. By combining cutting-edge research, education, and industry collaborations, Luleå University of Technology and CH2ESS contribute to securing both expertise and technical solutions for the energy transition of the future.
