Luleå University of Technology at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale
We are proud to announce that Agatino Rizzo, Professor of Architecture, Stefano Tornieri, Senior Lecturer in Architecture and Johan Sandström, Professor of Business Administration have been invited to exhibit their research at Biennale Architettura 2025 in Venice—the most prestigious architecture exhibition in the world!
The Biennale, held every two years in Venice and curated this year by Carlo Ratti, brings together architects, researchers, and innovators from around the globe to discuss and present current challenges and solutions in architecture and urban development. This year’s theme, "IntelliGens," focuses on how architecture can leverage intelligent systems and technology to create sustainable and future-proof cities.
The contribution to the Biennale is the exhibition "Transforming Legacy: The Evolution of Extractive Cultures in the European Arctic," which explores how AI and automation are gradually reshaping local and traditional knowledge in the Arctic. Technological advancements in resource extraction are influencing people’s relationship with the land and transforming urban structures through initiatives such as smart cities. At the same time, indigenous knowledge, such as Sami reindeer herding and traditional fishing techniques, offers alternative and more sustainable ways of life and work in the region. The exhibition highlights how advanced digital systems create both tensions and unexpected synergies in the Arctic landscape.
The exhibition will be on display from 10 May to 23 November 2025 in Venice's iconic Giardini and Arsenale.
