Snowball Fight and Winter Festival at Södra Hamn – Yukigassen Championship in Luleå City Center!
This year, students at Luleå University of Technology are inviting the public to an action-packed and exciting Snowball Championship in Luleå city center. The traditional snowball fight competition, the Yukigassen Swedish Championships, will take place on the ice at Södra Hamn, right beneath the harbor square by the crane, hopefully in front of a large crowd. Over 160 participants are signed up.
On February 21–22, teams will gather to compete for the title of Swedish champion in snowball fighting. Spectators can expect an intense and entertaining tournament, where skill, strategy, and precision will determine the winners. In addition to the competition, there will be a wonderful public festival with a cozy winter atmosphere, hot drinks, and cheerful cheers.
The Swedish Yukigassen Federation was founded by students at Luleå University of Technology in 2009, and to this day, it is the Mechanical Engineering Section's activities committee that keeps the tradition alive.

The competition kicks off on Friday, February 21, with group matches, where teams face off in intense battles. On Saturday, February 22, the tournament continues with playoffs and finals, where the best teams fight for the prestigious Swedish Championship title. This year’s winners of the Snowball Championship will receive a ticket to the European Championship in Finland, April 5–6, in Kemijärvi! Trophies and medals will also be awarded. The university administration is fielding a team again this year.
New this year, the students will leave the playing fields on the ice intact for Sunday – after the competition. This will allow anyone eager to play to try the ultimate winter sport. Maybe it will spark interest to compete next year?
So, bundle up, stretch your snowball throwing arm, and come to Södra Hamn to experience one of the winter’s most fun events!

Yukigassen is a team sport that originated in Japan and combines snowball fights with tactics and teamwork. Since 2009, Luleå University of Technology has been a venue for this popular sport in Sweden, where students compete to capture the opponent's flag without being hit by snowballs.
