From the Netherlands to Artic Sweden - Tom researches on electrification for a greener future
Luleå University of Technology plays an important role in the green transition through research on electrification. With a background in electrical engineering in the Netherlands, Tom Salm was attracted by the research environment and the personal atmosphere at the university.
Tell us about your research - what are you working on right now?
A lot of electrification is required for the green transition, and it has to be made sure that the electrified equipment is safe to use. In the project we are analysing the side effects of electrified equipment at airports, to make sure that there is no interference with airport systems and operations. North of Sweden is leading in electrification, and this means there are a lot of companies that we can cooperate with.
Tell us about your background and what made you move to Luleå?
I have done a bachelor study in electrical engineering in the Netherlands and moved to Sweden to continue a master study. During my master study in Gävle did my thesis supervisor told me about his previous work at Luleå University of Technology and about how much he liked Luleå. This made me look up the university and it turned out they had a fitting PhD position, after visiting the area, did I decide to move to Luleå.
What is the best thing about Luleå University of Technology?
It is the size of the university. The university is big enough to have interesting projects and have many contacts. But on the other hand, is small enough to maintain personal connection between all people.
Work with us
Luleå University of Technology offers a unique environment at the centre of the green transition, with a strong focus on research and development.
