LTU on Site in Skellefteå – Supporting Transition for the Future
Luleå University of Technology is currently present in Skellefteå during the information days organised by Skellefteå Municipality in response to the extensive redundancies at Northvolt. The university has also joined the non-profit business initiative Beredskapslyftet with the aim of helping to recruit qualified professionals.
"The situation in Skellefteå is a major challenge for the municipality and for all the employees who have been laid off from Northvolt. But there is also potential here – competence, as well as the determination and willingness to make the most of the initiatives that have been made. We are in Skellefteå this week to contribute what we do best: education, research, and long-term skills development," says Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn, Vice-Chancellor at Luleå University of Technology.
The university all week in Skellefteå
From Tuesday to Friday this week, Skellefteå Municipality is organising an open house at The Great Northern via Welcome House, where external organisations and all Northvolt employees have been invited. The aim is to offer a space where government agencies, transition organisations, and trade unions can inform attendees about the support they provide. Many of those laid off face an uncertain future – and the need for support, guidance, and new opportunities is great. Luleå University of Technology will be present at The Great Northern in Skellefteå throughout the week.
"We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Skellefteå Municipality for this well-organised initiative," says Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn.
New initiative through Transition Academy
A significant proportion of former Northvolt employees are academics, and the university is keen to engage with them so that their high-level expertise remains in the region – and in Sweden.
"Together with other stakeholders, we are now establishing what we call the Transition Academy – an academy for change. Here, we gather education, support, and resources related to the green transition for individuals who wish to change career paths, enhance their skills, or take the next step in their professional journey," says Birgitta Bergvall-Kåreborn.
