Luleå University of Technology makes major investment in AI
Artificial intelligence is transforming both society and academia. The University is now undergoing a extensive AI transformation that will permeate the entire organisation – from research and education to administration and leadership.
Luleå University of Technology is taking a unified approach to AI development through a strategic action plan that encompasses the entire organisation. The aim is to integrate AI into its core mission while ensuring the technology is used ethically, legally, and intelligently.
“AI is here to stay and affects all of us, regardless of our role. This is one of the biggest technological changes we face – perhaps comparable to the introduction of personal computers. We need to understand it and use it in a responsible and smart way,” says Pär Weihed, Pro Vice-Chancellor at Luleå University of Technology.
An AI course for all employees was launched in the beginning of 2025. It provides a basic understanding of AI and its applications in research, teaching, and administration. Over 600 ChatGPT licences have been purchased and distributed among the University’s staff based on need.
At the same time, plans are underway for each department to appoint a staff member with a specific role in driving local AI initiatives. A dedicated AI platform, LTU4EDU, will also be developed to support teachers in course planning and provide students with access to AI-based tools.
AI as a driver of quality and efficiency
Beyond technical solutions and skills development, the initiative is about shaping a unified approach and demonstrating clear strategic leadership.
“It is vital that we as a university don’t just keep up with developments but lead the way. With the right knowledge and structure, we can use AI to enhance both quality and efficiency across our entire operation,” says Pär Weihed.
The AI initiative spans the entire organisation – not just research and education, but also administrative support. New AI tools are being tested and introduced to streamline, for example, meeting minutes, document management, and other work processes.
Students play an important role in the transformation, especially as they belong to a generation for whom AI will be a natural part of both studies and working life. Students are currently represented through the student unions, which have members participating in the working group leading the University’s AI initiative.
“This is not about banning AI, but about rethinking. We need to equip our students for a job market where AI is a given part, while also ensuring they can reflect critically on the technology,” says Pär Weihed.
